Nigerian Lecturer Caught On Video Sexually Harassing Admission Seeker

A lecturer at the University of Lagos has been caught on camera making sexual demands to offer admission to a 'student'.

The lecturer was exposed in a 13 minutes video by BBC Africa where an undercover journalist, Kiki Mordi, disguised as a 17-year-old admission seeker.

The investigation is part of a broader one that uncovers the sex for grade crises in West African Universities.

The lecturer, Boniface Igbeneghu, is a former sub-dean of Faculty of Art and head pastor of local Foursquare Gospel Church.

Mr Igbeneghu invited the 'admission seeker' to his office for 'tutorials' and at their first meeting asked: "how old are you?".

After responding, the lecturer started commenting on her appearance.

"Don't you know you are a beautiful girl? Do you know I am a pastor and I am in my 50s but if I want a girl of 17 years, all I need is a sweet tongue and put some money," he said.

Documentary

From the documentary published on Facebook by BBC Yoruba and seen by PREMIUM TIMES, the lecturer invited the 'student' for a second meeting where they held prayer session together.

After the prayer, he simply asked: "what age do you start knowing men. Be assured that your mother will not hear."

While the reporter was yet to respond, Mr Igbeneghu described the secret place where lecturers meet to "touch students breast" at the staff club of the university.

"They call the place cold room," he said. He then explained that ladies must pay to have good grades.

At the last visit, he told the undercover journalist that if she truly wants admission in UNILAG, "she must be obedient".

"Do you want me to kiss you? Switch of the light, lock the door and I will kiss you for a minute. That's what they do in cold room."

The lecturer went to the bathroom and upon his return, he locked the door, switched off the light and embraced the 'admission seeker'.

"You are too stiff. I can call you to come any day. If you don't come, you know you are gone," he threatened the undercover journalist.

This revelation is coming a year after a student of Department of English, accused a professor of the same university of sexual harassment.

In May 2018, Joy Nwanna, a student of the institution, accused Olusegun Awonusi, a professor of English and former Vice-Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, of "habitual sexual harassment".

UNILAG silent

When contacted, the university spokesperson, Taiwo Oloyede, told BBC that the institution has zero-tolerance for sex scandal.

She did not provide any response to the "cold room" allegation.

When contacted on Monday, she did not respond to PREMIUM TIMES calls and text messages.

FG supporting stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid with N300 million loan: Osinbajo

says the Bank of Industry in collaboration with the National Council for Arts and Culture, has secured a N300 million loan for Nigeria’s creative sector.

Mr Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement, on Sunday, said the vice president disclosed this at the opening of Ogidi Studios, a Lagos-based world-class creative complex, hosting recording, film production, animation, and writing studios, owned by the Temple Company.

Last year, the federal government handed over the National Theatre’s control to the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee.

According to Mr Osinbajo, the committee has committed to an investment of N25 billion as initial funding for developing the Nigeria Creative Centre at the National Theatre, Lagos.

He stated further, “The sector will receive support from the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Creative Industry Funds Initiative, an initiative that gives financial support to the technology and creative sector at single-digit interest rates.

“The Bank of Industry, in collaboration with the National Council for Arts and Culture, has also secured a N300 million loan package for the creative sector. The package provides the funds to the sector at single-digit interest rates with a tenor of four to five years.”

Regarding the studios, he noted, “Now the stars, not just Nigerian stars, but from all over the world have a place in Lagos that is as good as any studio they have ever recorded in. World-class script writing, music recording, video making, and editing can take place under one roof at the Ogidi Studios.”

In 2019, Netflix opened its first African office in Lagos and invested millions of dollars in buying and generating authentic African content on its platform.

Mr Osinbajo cited Burnaboy and Wizkid for taking the entertainment industry by storm and winning the Grammy Awards, saying the environment is prepared for Nigeria to produce more creative talents across the industry’s value chain.

“On March 14, Burna Boy and Wizkid took the entertainment industry by storm, winning the Grammy Awards and established themselves as amongst the best musicians in the world.

“Burnaboy won in the ‘Best Global Music Album’ category for the ‘Twice As Tall’ Album and Wizkid; the real Starboy, in the Best Music Video category for his feature in the song ‘Brown Skin Girl,'” he said.

Insecurity: Reps want 18-year-old Nigerians, others to carry guns

The House of Representatives, may soon pass a Bill for Act, to permit Nigerians from the age of eighteen, to carry arms for self-defence.

The House of Representatives may soon pass a Bill for Act to permit Nigerians from the age of eighteen to carry arms for self-defence.

This contradicts President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to security services to shoot any civilian bearing arms.

A Bill to that effect, entitled: “Firearms Amendment Bill”, was exclusively obtained by VANGUARD at the weekend.

The Bill sponsored by Rep. Adejoro Adeogun, states in section 2 subsection 3, that “Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (1), a person shall be entitled to the grant of a license or permit under this Act if, at the time of application, the person: at least eighteen years of age”. and “has a psychological evaluation certificate from a government hospital not more than six months, has a vision quality certificate from a government hospital not more than six months, has a police clearance certificate not more than twelve months, has a rifle club membership of at least six months and a firearms proficiency certificate issued by the club, and has a national identification number”.

The Bill also demands that the bearer “Has a National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)”, adding that “The Inspector General of Police, shall maintain a manual and an e-register of such permits in force”.

The Bill also states that “The Inspector General of Police, may, with the consent of the Governor of the State, grant a permit to any person to carry on the business of manufacture and repair of the firearms referred to in Part III of the Schedule to this Act”.

The bill seeks a jail sentence of at least 2 years for offences to the law.

“Section 35 (2) of the Principal Act, is amended by substituting for the words, one thousand naira or imprisonment for two years, the words seventy-five thousand or imprisonment of not less than 2 years”.
