Insecurity: Reps want 18-year-old Nigerians, others to carry guns

The House of Representatives, may soon pass a Bill for Act, to permit Nigerians from the age of eighteen, to carry arms for self-defence.

The House of Representatives may soon pass a Bill for Act to permit Nigerians from the age of eighteen to carry arms for self-defence.

This contradicts President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to security services to shoot any civilian bearing arms.

A Bill to that effect, entitled: “Firearms Amendment Bill”, was exclusively obtained by VANGUARD at the weekend.

The Bill sponsored by Rep. Adejoro Adeogun, states in section 2 subsection 3, that “Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (1), a person shall be entitled to the grant of a license or permit under this Act if, at the time of application, the person: at least eighteen years of age”. and “has a psychological evaluation certificate from a government hospital not more than six months, has a vision quality certificate from a government hospital not more than six months, has a police clearance certificate not more than twelve months, has a rifle club membership of at least six months and a firearms proficiency certificate issued by the club, and has a national identification number”.

The Bill also demands that the bearer “Has a National Identification Number (NIN) issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)”, adding that “The Inspector General of Police, shall maintain a manual and an e-register of such permits in force”.

The Bill also states that “The Inspector General of Police, may, with the consent of the Governor of the State, grant a permit to any person to carry on the business of manufacture and repair of the firearms referred to in Part III of the Schedule to this Act”.

The bill seeks a jail sentence of at least 2 years for offences to the law.

“Section 35 (2) of the Principal Act, is amended by substituting for the words, one thousand naira or imprisonment for two years, the words seventy-five thousand or imprisonment of not less than 2 years”.

WAIT!! Did Tiwa Savage Win Grammy Award Yesterday? Why Is Nobody Celebrating It? (See This)

Burna Boy and Wizkid each clinched an award at the just concluded Grammys for Best Global Music Album and Best Music Video.

As the celebration was going on, some fans on social media began circulating reports that Tiwa Savage also got awards which have generated lots of controversy on social media.

According to Vanguard, Tiwa Savage, Femi and Made Kuti featured in Coldplay’s 2019 album, “Everyday Life”.

The album got a nomination for Best Record Packing and Album of The Year.

The Kutis featured on the amazing record, ‘Arabesque’ where Femi Kuti had an amazing Trumpet solo while Tiwa Savage worked on ‘Eko.’

The album, however, did win the much-coveted album of the year award as it went to Taylor Swift’s Album, Folklore.

If Coldplay had won, Tiwa Savage, Femi, and Made Kuti, would still not have won a Grammy. According to Vox:

Generally, if you participated in creating a significant portion of the album (defined as at least 33 percent of its playing time), you get a golden gramophone.

Also, looking at the rules of the category, it says:

For albums containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrumental recordings. Award to Artist(s) and to Featured Artist(s), Songwriter(s) of new material, Producer(s), Recording Engineer(s), Mixer(s), and Mastering Engineer(s) credited with at least 33% playing time of the album, if other than Artist.

Since the three Nigerian artists didn’t participate in creating 33% of the album, they will only get Grammy certificates and not gramophones.

Tiwa Savage has won several awards and one is “Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards”, becoming the first woman to win the category.

Summary, Tiwa Savage did not win any Grammy Award. I mean the gramophones, but was given a Grammy Certificate. Fair enough.

If you're jamb applicant, NYSC Applicant or You're about to obtain the form? You have to read this >>>>>>

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has said all admissions into the nation’s tertiary institutions for 2020/2021 academic session would end by June 15, 2021.

According to the board, the decision was collectively taken at a virtual meeting held with heads of tertiary institutions in the country. The announcement was contained in a statement made available to journalists yesterday.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, said the meeting with the institutions was aimed at knowing the level they had reached on the 2020/21 admissions scale.

“After a robust and insightful deliberation, members collectively agreed that all public universities are expected to finish their admissions on or before 15th May 2021, while the private universities and all IEIs, polytechnics and colleges of education would complete theirs at the agreed date of 15th June 2021,” the statement said.

Oloyede reiterated that the chosen deadlines remained sacrosanct and binding on all institutions as the board would not tolerate any breach of the collective decision reached the meeting.

He said the board would announce, in a week’s time, the commencement date for the sale of application documents for the 2021/2022 academic session.

The registrar urged all institutions to adhere strictly to all advisories issued to them on inter/intra-university transfers, foreign inter-university transfers and fresh foreign candidates, change of programmes and institutions and other essential processes related to admission.

He said the directive was necessary to avoid unnecessary bickering that could endanger the future of innocent candidates and their subsequent mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Oloyede explained that the transfer of candidates within institutions locally or internationally is an acceptable process as approved by the senate or council of the respective institutions but said that due process must be followed.

According to him, the board, as a responsible organisation and gatekeeper, would not allow the process to be circumvented to allow unqualified candidates gain access to our institutions.

“JAMB would not be a party to any improper transfer or breach of set guidelines. Adequate measures or checks must be done to verify if such candidates meet minimum requirements or possess the prerequisite qualifications to be in the institution in the first instance.”
